Overview

Caliper consists of a suite of tools to support maintenance and use of statistical classifications expressed as linked open data along their entire lifecycle.

Initially (from 2022 through mid 2024) Caliper was branded as the dissemination platform for statistical classifications of FAO, the tools hosted at UNITOV, and a website (https://www.fao.org/statistics/caliper/web/) serving as the entry point to them, hosted and maintained by FAO (CSI). The website is static and contains links to tools serving the functionalities associated to Caliper and hosted at the University of Tor Vergata (from now on, UNITOV), and a Download page offering files stored in the GoogleCloud space of the datalab. Tools hosted there are accessible from an fao.org address, redirected to uniroma2.it address. UNITOV takes care of the maintenance of server and tools and, with  troubleshooting, software upgrade, backup, oversee of dataflow (e.g., update of Fuseki with data from VocBench, see below).

Tor Vergata also still maintains the very first instances of Caliper developed during the first phase of the Cross-cutting grant, still accessible from a “uniroma2.it” URL, currently used for tests.

In 2024 FAO signed off an LoA with UNITOV to realize a dockerized version of Caliper, for deployment in different locations. The first of such deployment was made in FAO (completed in July 2024), with the intent of serving internal statistical systems, such as the Statistical Working System, and possibly become the FAO Master Data Management for statistical classifications and metadata.

The second deployment, at the BC3 node of the Global Platform, is expected to be completed in October 2024 and replace the original deployment at UNITOV.
