ASFIS is a list of aquatic species relevant to fisheries, grouped according to two different views - biological (ISFAS) and commercial (ISSCAAP).

See picture below for a schematic representation:

IN practice: Species are defined in the ASFIS namespace, while the entities used for grouping are defined in their own namespace, ASFIS or ISSCAAP respectively. Two  small ontologies contain the description of the entities in each domain - for example, the taxa used in the ASFIS grouping (Major, Order, Family, Species) are defined in the ASFIS ontology (OWL), while individual taxon are in the ASFIS concept scheme (SKOS).

Model

Imports two ontologies:

ASFIS ontology (prefix asfis) https://stats.fao.org/ontologies/asfis. Defines the taxonomic hierarchy. See screenshot:

and two specific properties to construct the hierarchy. See screenshot, same for ISSCAAP.

ISSCAAP ontology, (prefix isscaap) https://stats.fao.org/ontologies/isscaap. Defines two classes, isscaap:Division, isscaap:Group, and two specific properties to construct the hierarchy. See screenshot.

Description: each ASFIS species belongs to both schemes, while the hierarchies are "built" using the specific "broader/narrower" defined in the corresponding ontologies (see above).

Note that the hierarchy contains "jumps", e.g. Oder → Species.
